Packages are the least costly of all ways to receive honeybees. It’s a great way to start a new hive or repopulate a dead-out hive. Many new and experienced beekeepers start with cost-effective packages. However, with cost-effectiveness comes risk. Although plenty of them survive, a package can have more of a struggle to get going as the bees and queen are not related, and they are starting from scratch. It takes several days just to see if they will accept the queen introduced. We use packages about 65% of the time.
